Powerful images from the US Civil Rights movement on exhibit at Eastham Library as part of MLK Day commemoriation

"Turns out Scherman had a Cape Cod connection ... when he relocated to Western Mass he gifted a collection of his photos taken during the civil rights movement to the Lighthouse Charter School...."

Outreach Librarian, Eastham Public Library

What is the Rowland Scherman Civil Rights photo collection?

As a young man, Rowland Scherman was the (equally young) Peace Corps' first photographer and he became witness to many of era's significant historical moments. He went on to freelance for LIFE, TIme, Look, National Geographic, and others. When he lived on Cape Cod, he worked with Artworks! Gallery and master printer Bob Korn to curate a lifetime of iconic images.  The Rowland Scherman Civil Rights photo collection includes about 50 museum quality prints that he gifted to the Lighthouse Charter School.

What is the current Civil Right photography exhibit?

As part of its commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Eastham Public Library is hosting the traveling exhibit of prints from the Rowland Scherman Civil Rights photography collection. The exhibit includes scenes from the 1963 March on Washington, as well as many other events and key figures in the Civil Rights movement.

When can the public see the exhibit?

The exhibit will be at the Eastham library through January 31 2024 and is free and open to the public Monday-Saturday.
