Cape Codders respond to call for hurricane help.

“The Barnstable County Sheriff's Office reached out to all the Cape Cod police departments and asked if we'd be willing to participate in collecting relief items, which of course we jumped right on, we felt that it was our duty to support our fellow citizens..."
Chief Adam Bohannon
Chief , Eastham Police Department

How is Cape Cod responding to hurricanes in the south?

10 October 2024 - CAPE COD, MA - Cape Codders know hurricanes - so when the Barnstable County Sheriff's office reached out to the Cape's local police departments for help gathering relief materials, no one hesitated. This weekend, full trailers will be on the way to the southeastern states recovering from Hurricane Helene with potentially follow on trailers responding the now expanded need from Hurricane Milton.

Who supported the hurricane relief effort?

Eastham police chief Adam Bohannon said all of the police departments rose the challenge, even challenging each other a bit. In Eastham, the Eastham police reached out to the Nauset Regional High School as well and parents and students have been dropping off items from a specific list of relief materials during school drop off and pick up times. The identified relief materials all target either post hurricane clean up (think work gloves, rakes, and shovels) or items to support human well-being (think bottled water).

What happens next?

Materials gathered locally will move to the sheriff's office and from there travel by tractor trailer to areas in the southeastern US impacted by the Sept 27 Hurricane Helene. In the aftermath of this weeks' Hurricane Milton - rolling across Florida less than two weeks later after Helene did - additional relief efforts may continue.
