Winter's Icy Fingers
Cape Cod News editorial staff
As Cape Cod enters deepest winter, what should be doing to prepare?
"Here on Cape Cod we don't get a lot of snow ... so we really battle ice and ice storms a lot ... for the last week DPW had been out three time monitoring the storms and providing salt and sand onto the local roads ..."
— Chief Robert Moran
Chief, Brewster Fire Department
What is winter like on Cape Cod?
The icy fingers of winter have arrived - and on Cape Cod ice plays a central role. While the Cape has comparatively little snow, ice and ice storms come roaring in, along with wind and cold.
What are some cold weather safety tips?
Brewster Fire Chief Robert Moran offers a few cold weather safety tips:
- During the cold, people often turn on space heaters. These heaters should always be plugged directly into the wall and never used with an extension cord, and should always be at least three feel away from combustible material.
- Portable generators should never run inside a home or garage.
- Carbon monoxide alarms should be tested and functioning.
- Keep flashlights or other battery-powered lights in an easy to find location.
- Never leave a running car unattended in the garage.
- Keep fire hydrants free from snow if you have a hydrant outside your house .
What are some sources for more winter information?
Most towns, including Brewster, have a notification system. Chief Moran suggestions going to your town website to sign up to receive updates during storms and other emergencies.
