Cape Cod News editorial staff
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management proposes siting a 1 million acre wind farm in the Gulf of Maine, including an area 23 miles offshore of the Lower and Outer Cape. On Wednesday July 17 BOEM held an in-person public information session on Cape Cod in Eastham.
"The Gulf of Maine is unique in many ways, and from an offshore wind perspective one of the reasons it's unique is the consistent high wind speeds, as well as relative proximity to high loads of energy demand."
Luke Feinberg,
Energy Program Specialist, BOEM
What was the wind turbine siting hearing?
26 July, 2024 – EASTHAM, MA – More than 200 Cape Codders attended the public information session at the Four Points Sheraton in Eastham, July 17. The session, called by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) included both presentation and public Q&A time about the wind farm leasing process and its environmental assessment. The formal presentation was cut short to give more time to the public's comments and questions.
Why was there a wind turbine siting hearing?
BOEM is proposing lease sales of one million acres - some of it within 23 miles of the lower and outer Cape Cod shoreline - for construction and operation of a wind power station with the capacity of supplying energy to five million homes.
