"There's now a board of seven and upward of 50 volunteers .... Truro on its face is a nice beach community for people with second homes but beneath that surface are people who are really living in need ..."

What is happening at Truro Community Kitchen?

15 May 2024 - TRURO, MA - The Truro Community Kitchen (TCK) has new green on its menu: reusable meal containers. Through a partnerships with the Clean Water Fund's Rethink Disposable project,  Truro Central School, and Cape Cod 5, nonprofit TCK no longer uses single use containers. Instead, its meals go out in reusable bags and containers, which are returned, washed, and reused over and over.

What is Truro Community Kitchen?

Truro Community Kitchen began making and delivering meals to people at risk during the height of COVID in 2020 - but quickly realized the meal program needs transcended the pandemic. Four years later they still serve the community and building long term sustainable practices.

At TCK, people receive meals by asking, with no additional qualification application needed. For some, financial resources send them to the kitchen, while others reach out while grappling with health or caretaking challenges. Kitchen co-founder Eli Sobel says they offer food with no strings attached.

What made re-usable container possible?

The move away from one use plastics happened through a collaboration with Truro Central School, regional bank Cape Cod 5, the Clean Water Fund and Rethink Disposable, a New England based effort that supports transitions from single use to reusable supplies.  The partners organizations provide guidance, funding, and a process for cleaning the containers in the public school's kitchens.
