“We were responsible for bringing forward the plans .... we needed to ask for $11.4M in excluded debt to be able to do the first two phases on the bay property and first 3 phases on the pond property. ..."

What happened at the Brewster Special Town Meeting?

20 November 2024 - BREWSTER, MA - Brewster moved another step forward toward developing the former Sea Camps properties. In Brewster's Fall Special fall meeting on November 18, Article 6 created a bit of a roller coaster - but passed in the end.

The article funded the initial phases of work at both Bay and Pond properties. In a close vote, the article first fell two votes short of required 2/3 majority. Then, a  motion for reconsideration immediately came to the floor and in the second vote the article passed by just six votes.

What is Article 6?

Article 6 addressed the need to fund the first phases of work at the former Seas Camps property. In May, Town Meeting voted on an overcall concept plan for the properties. Sea Camps includes two locations, the so-called "Bay parcel"  on Cape Cod Bay at 3057 Main Street which currently includes the Cape's first town swimming pool,  and the so-called "Pond parcel" at 500 W H Besse Cartway.

In order to move forward with the initial phases of work, Town Meeting needed to approve an $11.4 debt exclusion to fund the work. Article 6 authorized the funding.

What else happened at the meeting?

Of the remaining 10 articles on the warrant, 9 passed easily and one was postponed. These included  routine bill payments and approved town purchases such as a scissors lift and two hybrid police cruisers.

What happens next?

The article passed town meeting and now must be voted upon in a town-wide election December 3.
