In honor of Veterans Day - and the 248th birthday of the US Marine Corps - veterans connected for a first-ever breakfast for veterans hosted by nonprofit Massachusetts Military Support Foundation (MMSF). The meeting also unveiled the organization's plan to develop emergency housing for veterans on Cape Cod.
Hundreds from across Cape Cod gathered in Hyannis for the November 10 breakfast gathering. Breakfast served as an excuse and backdrop for the real business: connecting veterans to veterans and and supporting networking and conversations among those who have served across many eras.
In addition to supporting critical connections, MMSF used the event to unveil its plans for temporary housing on the Cape. The plans fit into the organization's larger Emergency Housing 4 Veterans (EH4V) program.
Executive Director Sarah Fecteau explained that the Cape housing market trends see people selling housing and evicting tenants with little notice. It hopes to open a 10-unit building that would provide short-term rentals where people who have lost their housing can live while they search for permanent housing.
During the breakfast, the organization showed architectural renderings and floor plans of 10 efficiency apartments. The group is looking at a site on South Street in Hyannis.
