New bike laws went into effect in April impacting bicyclists and motorists

"These laws were enacted to try and minimize the risk for vulnerable users..."

— Scott MacDonald
Chief of Police, Orleans

What are some of the new bike laws?

According to new Massachusetts laws that went into effect April 1, bikes must now have rear red lights for nighttime cycling in addition to a reflector and a white front headlight.  Motorists need to provide a four-foot barrier when passing bicyclists and are allowed to cross the double yellow line in order to do, as long as it is safe.

When did the new laws go into effect?

According to Orleans Chief of Police Scott MacDonald, the new Massachusetts state laws went into effect this April and will be in place during Cape Cod's busy summer season.

What does this means for dangerous intersections?

In Orleans, the Old Colony and Main Street intersection has a reputation for being both busy and dangerous. While design change is coming soon, a respect for the new laws, common sense patience, and roadway awareness also make an immediate impact on the bike and motorist safety at intersections like this.
