21 April, 2023 - HYANNIS, MA - Cape Cod has received a federal cash infusion to support power infrastructure for soon-to-arrive electric planes, buses, and rental cars.
The US Department of Transportation SMART grant brings nearly $2 million to the Cape Cod Gateway Airport and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority to develop a smart micro-grid as part of infrastructure support for soon-to-arrive electric planes, buses, and rental cars.
Micro grids combine solar or wind or other locally generated power with a giant backup battery storage array that gets called upon to supplement the larger grid.
Cape Cod already hosts one mico-grid; that groundbreaking system was been
successfully tested on Cape Cod and now delivers backup electricity from Provincetown to Wellfleet during power surge demand and power outages.
The SMART program was established to provide grants to eligible public sector agencies to conduct demonstration projects focused on advanced smart community technologies and systems in order to improve transportation efficiency and safety.
