This month the Truro Community Kitchen (TCK) says good bye to single use plastics and hello to re-usable containers. With help from the Clean Water Fund's Rethink Disposable project, a New England based effort that supports transitions from single use to reusable supplies, nonprofit TCK is making a shift that it says both saves waster and makes a statement that the organization is here for the long term.
Truro Community Kitchen began making and delivering meals to people at risk during the height of COVID in 2020 - but quickly realized the meal program needs transcended the pandemic. Four years later they still serve the community and building long term sustainable practices.
At TCK, people receive meals by asking, with no additional qualification application needed. For some, financial resources send them to the kitchen, while others reach out while grappling with health or caretaking challenges. Kitchen co-founder Eli Sobel says they offer food with no strings attached.
TCK draws on a range of supporters to move away from one use plastics, including regional bank Cape Cod 5, the Clean Water Fund and Rethink Disposable, and Truro Central School.
