Free-Fare Bus Rides

Cape Cod News editorial staff

Starting 1 February, some Cape Codders may leave their wallets at home when riding the bus. The CCRTA is offering free bus rides for seniors and people with a disability.

"Close to 40 percent of all our residents are 60 years or older ... Senior mobility should be a priority here."

Tom Cahir,
Administrative, CCRTA.

Why is RTA offering free bus rides?

The Cape Cod Regional Transportation Authority is offering free bus fares daily for people over 60 years of age and people with disabilities. Thanks to a one-year-grant of $500 000 from MassDOT the free fares will last for a year, but Tom Cahir, Administrative for CCRTA, believes they can keep scratching the fees for much longer, even without a grant.

For how long will bus fares be free?

Tom Cahir says the seniors of the Cape Cod's aging population have been enjoying free bus rides every Wednesday, and when looking at the statistics, the CCRTA saw a consistent increase in passengers on Wednesdays. Tom Cahir says the CCRTA has the financial capacity to extend the free fares for this group of passengers beyond the end of the grant-year.
