Executive Director, Harwich Conservation Trust

Harwich, a town with deep roots in cranberry cultivation, faces challenges as cranberry market oversupply drives down prices nationally. Local growers, unable to turn a profit seek alternative solutions to preserve the historical significance of cranberry farming - leading to restoration of bogs back to wetlands.

The Harwich Conservation Trust Initiative

Enter the Harwich Conservation Trust, offering an innovative approach to save the legacy of cranberry bogs. By acquiring properties from struggling growers, the trust aims to transform these landscapes into scenic conservation destinations.

Tackling Ecological Challenges

The project addresses ecological challenges caused by decades of cranberry farming, such as diminished water quality and habitat diversity. The downstream impact on Saquatucket Harbor emphasizes the urgency of restoring wetlands to counter water quality issues.

A Comprehensive Restoration Approach

The Harwich Conservation Trust's three-phase eco-restoration project combines planning, permitting, and construction to ensure the preservation of natural habitats. The estimated cost, exceeding two million dollars, covers various aspects, including enhancing visitor experiences and recreational opportunities.

Climate Resilience and Sea Level Rise

The initiative also considers climate change impacts, with a focus on sea level rise. The project anticipates transitioning freshwater wetlands to salt marshes, showcasing the resilience of wetland restoration projects against climate challenges.
